Platforms change these limits from time to time, and the visible part depends on screen size and line breaks. We review this table periodically; check the platform’s help pages if a number is critical.
How characters are counted
The counter counts characters the way people see them, so an emoji or accented letter counts as one. X counts most emoji and some scripts (such as Chinese and Japanese) as two characters, and every link as 23; the X row allows for that. Line breaks count as one character on every platform.
Writing for the visible part
- Put the hook in the first line: a specific benefit, a surprising fact or a question your audience is asking.
- Avoid starting with your business name, a greeting or a hashtag.
- Use line breaks to make longer posts scannable, but remember each one uses visible space before “See more”.
- Write a separate version per platform rather than cross-posting the same text. The Content Repurposing Planner helps.
