How the diagnoser works
Each Search Console status has a small set of known causes. The diagnoser starts from the causes Google documents for your status, then uses your answers to put them in order: a new page with no internal links points to discovery and priority problems; an old page with thin, similar content points to quality and duplication. It is a structured checklist, not a live inspection of your site.
Statuses that are often fine
- Alternate page with proper canonical tag and Page with redirect are usually working as intended.
- Not found (404) is fine for pages you deliberately removed, as long as nothing important links to them.
- Excluded by noindex is correct for thank-you pages, internal search results and admin pages.
Checking a page yourself
- Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console and look at “Page indexing”, “Crawl allowed?”, “Indexing allowed?” and “User-declared canonical” vs “Google-selected canonical”.
- View the live test to see the page as Googlebot renders it.
- Check robots.txt with the Robots.txt Tester.
- Only use “Request indexing” after fixing a real issue. Requesting repeatedly does not change Google’s decision about quality.
When quality is the cause
“Crawled – currently not indexed” and many duplicate statuses usually mean Google did not see enough unique value to index the page. Adding a few words rarely helps. Merging similar pages, adding genuinely useful detail and linking to the page from relevant pages does. Our article on crawled, currently not indexed goes deeper, and the Keyword Cannibalisation Checker helps find overlapping pages.
